Things To Do In York Region, Ontario

Thornhill Ontario is a community split between the two cities of Vaughan and Markham and it runs along the northern border of Toronto. Situated in York Region it is home to vibrant communities featuring a plethora of things to do that will keep you busy be it in winter or summer. Springfarm Yorkhill is a neighbourhood in Thornhill.

With a wide range of recreational activities York Region is fun for residents and visitors alike with  plenty of outdoor fun, galleries, museums and restaurants. It is a great place to spend some time adventuring and exploring. We asked Sol Kahane, a real estate agent who’s lived in Springfarm Yorkhill for 25 years about things to do in York Region. These are some of his suggestions:

  • Golf

If you like to golf there are over twenty clubs to choose from in the region. With a wide variety of quality public and private courses you could spend every day of the week on a different green with a good number of them listed in the top 100 golf courses in Canada. With a perfect combination of natural space and amazing locations golfers are lucky to have a lot of great golfing options.

  • Farmers Markets

Spending a morning at a farmers market is a fun way to spend the day filled with all kinds of health benefits. The York Farmers Market sits in the historic Thornhill Village. It is open 4 days per week from Thursday to Sunday. Boasting numerous vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods and fine cheeses as well as hand-made jewelry, soaps and flowers.

  • Conservation Areas

If you enjoy the outdoors York has a large number of conservation areas to visit. There are many to choose from each offering a different variety of things to do. Willow Beach is a great spot for swimming and picnicking, while Rogers Reservoir is perfect for birding and hiking. Scanlon Creek has tobogganing and cross-country skiing. Grab a map and take in the numerous outdoor playgrounds.

  • Art Galleries and Museums 

Art enthusiasts will not be at a loss when it comes to finding something to see in York Region. Known for its world-renowned galleries and support of local artists who live and work in the area. There are often a number of art festivals throughout the year as well as permanent installations, rotating exhibits, studio courses and workshops in the many art venues.

  • Wineries 

The York Region is home to a large number of amazing wineries. Organize a group of friends and spend the day partaking in wine tastings from one of the many grandiose establishments. Along with good wine comes good food so make a reservation at a restaurant nestled in among the vineyards. With menus serving local and fresh seasonal food paired nicely with a complimentary wine it is sure to be a good day.

  • Recreational Outdoor Campus (ROC)

Know by the locals as “The Roc” this recreational playground is a source of pride and fun for the community. With so much to do it is the ultimate in outdoor fun and a great place to spend a day or two. In the winter families can ski, snowboard, toboggan or walk along the many year-round trails. During the summer months kids and parents can rock climb, zip-line, bike or play tennis and basketball.

  • Restaurants

From fine dining to more casual fares there are plenty of places to choose from in York’s many restaurant establishments. Whether you feel like Italian, Ethiopian, Greek, Spanish, Vietnamese or typical Canadian pub fare. Whatever your taste buds crave you will have no problem finding it here. Top quality food served in an atmosphere that suits you. Enjoy a night on the town.

  • Breweries

Craft beers are all the rage these days and there are a lot of breweries to choose from if that is your thing. With cool venues and so many beer options get some friends together and head out for a day of beer sampling. Order a flight of beer or chose your favourite IPA. Many micro-breweries also served food so stay for lunch or dinner.

The York Region is a very diverse and dynamic area made up of neighbouring communities that offer many different ways to pass a day. It is one of the six municipalities that amalgamated to form part of modern-day Toronto though it still maintains its own rich culture and charm. Whether visiting or calling it home York has so much to offer. Take some time to get to know it you will not regret it.
